How to Know Which Mahadasha You Are Running Now
One of the most practical questions in Vedic astrology is also one of the most personal: which planetary period am I running right now? In the Vimshottari dasha system, your life unfolds as a sequence of planetary chapters, and knowing your current chapter explains a great deal about the themes, opportunities and challenges of this stage of your life.
A quick recap of Vimshottari
Vimshottari spans a full 120 years, divided among nine planets, each ruling a Mahadasha (major period) of fixed length:
- Ketu — 7 years
- Venus — 20 years
- Sun — 6 years
- Moon — 10 years
- Mars — 7 years
- Rahu — 18 years
- Jupiter — 16 years
- Saturn — 19 years
- Mercury — 17 years
The order is always the same; only your starting point differs.
How your current dasha is determined
Your very first Mahadasha is set by the nakshatra the Moon occupied at your birth, because each nakshatra has a ruling planet. If, say, your Moon was in a nakshatra ruled by Venus, you began life in a Venus Mahadasha — but usually only a *portion* of it, depending on how far the Moon had already travelled through that star. From there the sequence rolls forward: when one planet's years end, the next in the list begins.
So to know your current Mahadasha, an astrologer calculates your Moon's exact nakshatra position at birth, finds how much of the first dasha was already elapsed, and then counts forward to today's date.
Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantar
Each Mahadasha is further divided into Antardashas (bhuktis) — sub-periods ruled by all nine planets in turn — and those are divided again into Pratyantardashas. This is why two people in the same Saturn Mahadasha can have very different years: one may be in Saturn–Jupiter, another in Saturn–Rahu. The combination of the main and sub-period lords colours the experience.
Why the same dasha can feel so different
People often notice that a period which was wonderful for a friend feels heavy for them, even under the very same planet. There are two reasons. First, the Antardasha matters enormously — a Jupiter Mahadasha in its Jupiter–Saturn sub-period is a very different season from Jupiter–Venus. Second, and more importantly, a planet delivers results according to its own condition in your chart: the sign it occupies, the houses it rules, whether it is exalted, debilitated or combust, and the aspects it receives. A well-placed Saturn can make its long nineteen-year period the most productive stretch of a life, while a troubled Jupiter can turn even its "lucky" years into a test. This is exactly why a dasha should never be judged by the planet's general reputation alone.
What each planet's period tends to bring
Broadly — and always subject to that planet's strength and placement in your own chart:
- Sun: authority, recognition, matters of self and father.
- Moon: emotions, home, public life, the mind.
- Mars: energy, property, courage, conflict.
- Rahu: ambition, foreign or unconventional gains, sudden change.
- Jupiter: wisdom, wealth, children, expansion and good fortune.
- Saturn: hard work, discipline, delay, and lasting rewards earned slowly.
- Mercury: communication, business, learning, adaptability.
- Ketu: detachment, spirituality, endings and inner change.
- Venus: love, marriage, comfort, art and pleasure.
The key caveat
A dasha does not act in isolation. A Jupiter period is only as fortunate as Jupiter is in your chart; a Saturn period can be a time of great achievement if Saturn is well placed. This is exactly why the current dasha must be read against your full horoscope, not in the abstract.
