The Idea Behind Guna Milan

Ashtakoota Guna Milan compares the birth nakshatras and Moon signs of the prospective bride and groom across eight dimensions, called kootas. Each koota measures a different aspect of compatibility — mental, physical, temperamental, and constitutional — and carries a certain number of points. Add them up, and you get a score out of 36. The higher the score, the more the traditional system considers the couple naturally compatible.

Crucially, the whole system is built on the Moon and its nakshatra, because in Jyotish the Moon governs the mind and emotions, and marriage is, above all, a meeting of two minds and emotional natures.

The Eight Kootas

Here is what each of the eight factors measures and its weight:

1. Varna (1 point) — spiritual or ego compatibility; the broad temperamental "caste" of the mind (not social caste). It checks a basic harmony of nature.

2. Vashya (2 points) — mutual attraction and control; how naturally the two are drawn to and influence each other.

3. Tara or Dina (3 points) — health and wellbeing; the compatibility of the couple's birth stars for mutual prosperity and longevity.

4. Yoni (4 points) — physical and sexual compatibility, symbolised by animal archetypes assigned to each nakshatra; measures instinctual and intimate harmony.

5. Graha Maitri (5 points) — mental and intellectual compatibility, based on the friendship between the planetary lords of the two Moon signs; one of the most important factors for a lasting bond.

6. Gana (6 points) — temperament; each nakshatra belongs to a deva (divine), manushya (human), or rakshasa (intense) gana, and this measures the meeting of the two temperaments.

7. Bhakoot (7 points) — emotional compatibility and the overall wellbeing of the union, based on the relationship between the two Moon signs; affects prosperity, health, and family.

8. Nadi (8 points) — constitutional and genetic compatibility, the highest-weighted factor, concerning health and progeny. A "Nadi dosha" (both partners sharing the same Nadi) is traditionally taken seriously.

Add the maximum points — 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8 — and you reach 36.

What the Score Means

Interpretation of the total is broadly:

- Below 18: traditionally considered a low match; caution advised.
- 18 to 24: an acceptable, workable match.
- 24 to 31: a good match.
- 31 to 36: an excellent, highly compatible match.

Most reasonably compatible couples score somewhere in the middle-to-upper range. A very high score is favourable, but — and this is the point most often missed — the number alone never decides a marriage.

Why the Score Is a Starting Point, Not a Verdict
